Today was a celebration of Martin’s birthday with alcohol! Due to needing to leave early (as watching the first match of Euro 2008 was imperative) we only visited three pubs, but here’s an impression of the booze in each. I decided, after last night’s session, to stick to the white. Also useful, as today’s blouse is black and white and would show up stains if I decided to dribble said booze over myself, which is always a worry.
Pub 1: The Commercial – Silverland Chenin Chardonnay – 12.5% – £2.80 for 175ml (but I had a large…)
Very nice white – smelt charmingly of berries. A tad sweet for me, but then I like my white bone dry. Good legs on it when I swirled it around the glass, and it was served by a very nice barmaid in a pub with dogs. Very reasonably priced for the flavour. Yum.

Pub 2: The Prince Regent – Domaine de Laurier, Languedoc – ? – £5.65 for 250ml
Peachy smell, again not quite dry enough for my taste buds, but very soft and easy to drink. To be honest, and perhaps I’m used to cheap wine, but I like a bit more of an argument with my wine – a bit more bite to it. Like an overzealous German Shepherd. Plus, pricey!

Pub 3: The Florence – house white – 175ml – Abi bought it for me – woohoo!
Smelt like tinned fruit with a dent in the tin that had been kept for 70 years in the Antarctic in Scott’s house or something. Not good. This was rather bland and, again, very easy to drink. Where’s the wine that takes the lining off your throat?! Not in Herne Hill, clearly, my friends. It gets one extra point, however, for being served in an enormous goblet, which allowed me to experience what life must be like for an alcoholic Borrower.
